Abstract

1493966 Dual-drive power units THERMO KING CORP 27 Jan 1975 [7 Feb 1974] 3488/75 Heading H2A [Also in Division F1] In a dual-drive power plant for driving a driven member 48 selectively from either one of two prime movers, at least one of which is an electric motor having a rotor 24, and the other of which includes a rotatable power take off member, the electric motor is disposed between the driven member 48 and the other prime mover (not shown) and the power take off member comprises a drive shaft 10 which extends axially into the electric motor and rotatably supports the rotor for rotation thereof independently of the drive shaft, the rotor being in constant driving connection with the driven member 48 and being coupled to the power take-off member through a clutch 6 which is adapted to be engaged and disengaged upon activation and deactivation respectively of the other prime mover. The clutch is a centrifugal clutch comprising clutch arms 16 only one of which is shown. Each clutch arm carries a driving element of the clutch which moves into engagement with the inner peripheral surface 20 of the driven member 18. As described, the other prime mover is an internal combustion engine but it is stated that this prime mover could be another electric motor.
