1493720 Apparatus for effecting measurements in a melt FRIED KRUPP GmbH 7 Oct 1975 [9 Oct 1974] 41065/75 Heading G1B Apparatus for effecting measurements in a melt of molten metal by means of a measuring cartridge 156 mounted on the lower end of a lance (54) comprises a framework including an arm 8 pivoted for movement about a vertical axis, a hollow mast 9 carried by arm 8, carrier 10, 12 attached to the lance and disposed within the mast, a hoisting unit which may include a cable and pulley system within mast 9, pulley 18 and electric motor 14 for raising and lowering the lance carrier with respect to the mast, measuring cartridge magazine 82 and discharge device 110 for spent cartridges, arm 8 being rotatable when the carrier is raised with respect to the mast from a position in which it extends over the melt in ladle 1 to enable the lance to be lowered into the melt to two distinct other positions, in one of which the lance is disposed above magazine 82 to enable the lance to withdraw successive cartridges from the magazine and in the other of which the lance is disposed above the discharge device 110. The measuring rounds are normally stored in a row within magazine 82 and the end one is raised when required for coupling to the lance by means of a pneumatic device (101), Fig. 12 (not shown). The measuring round itself (which is discarded via 110 after each measurement) comprises a cardboard tube from the bottom of which projects a sheet metal cap (58) containing a thermocouple junction, the electrical connections (59) to which pass upwardly through lance 12 Fig. 11 (not shown).
