Abstract

1493507 Steering boats OCEAN ELECTRONICS Ltd 2 April 1976 [11 April 1975] 15021/75 Heading B7V An actuator for moving the tiller 3 of a boat comprises a reversible electric motor 4, a screwthreaded shaft 5 driven by the motor 4, a nut 6 screwed on to the shaft 5, and a quick-release coupling 10, one part being fixed to the nut 6 and the other part being adapted for fixing to the tiller 3. Rubber bellows 7, 8 fixed to the nut 6 enclose the shaft 5 to protect the shaft from the environment and prevent the nut rotating when the coupling is released. The coupling comprises a plate 13 having holes 14 for tiller fixing screws, the plate 13 carrying a block 18 bored to receive a spigot 15 universally mounted on the nut 6. The spigot 15 is retained in the bore 19 by a U-shaped plate 20 urged by a spring 21 to a position in which an edge thereof engages a groove 17 in the spigot and thus retain the latter in the bore 19. To release the coupling a string connected to a suitable one of holes 22-25 in the plate 20 is tensioned. A potentiometer driven by the shaft 5 is located in the housing of the motor 4 to provide a position signal. The motor and shaft are removably attached to boat 2 byapin 12. A heading sensing unit (not shown) responsive to the magnetic heading or the angle between the apparent wind and the heading of the boat is used to control the energization of the motor.
