Abstract

Electro-magnets. -The armature of an electro-magnet is made of a combination of metals, such as brass or iron, so chosen with regard to thermal expansion that with change of temperature the armature automatically changes the length of the air-gap and compensates the temperature variation of resistance in the magnet windings, thereby ensuring that the armature is moved by a predetermined voltage or so that any desired variation of the length of air-gap may be produced by given variations of the armature temperature. In the form shown, the T-shaped armature of a twopole magnet is made of soft iron b with a longitudinal strip c of feebly or non-magnetic material secured to it so that increase of temperature causes it to bend, as shown by dotted lines. Alternatively, the transverse members or both members of the T may be of compound metal so as to bend with change of temperature.
