Abstract

1493238 Refractory composition; magnesium oxide DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 3 June 1976 [7 June 1975] 23053/76 Headings ClA and ClJ A composition suitable for compaction to form the electrically insulating material of a tubular heating element, comprises granular fused magnesium oxide and a refractory oxidic additive, the additive having sliding properties such that it is capable of reducing destruction of the magnesium oxide crystals during compaction, and the additive also having a topochemical reactivity such that it is capable of reacting with the active conductivity centres at the surface of one or more adjacent magnesium oxide crystals at temperatures of from 800-1050‹ C. Preferably the additive is sintered, or fused and quenched, lying within the system the grains of the additive consisting of amorphous and microcrystalline to cryptocrystalline phases, the maximum crystal size in the crystalline fraction being 10 microns. Preferably the additive consists of 10-35% by wt. Al 2 O 3 , from 40-75% by wt. SiO 2 and 5-25% by wt. MgO, and is present in an amount of 0À05-5% by weight.
