Abstract
1492953 Free machining steel INLAND STEEL CO and ECHEVARRIA SA 10 March 1975 [14 Aug 1974] 9830/75 Heading C7A, D An as rolled free machining steel bar contains micro-inclusions of lead (invisible below x 10 magnification) in machinability increasing amounts (e.g. 0À05 to 0À7 wt. per cent) and having no substantial amount of macro-inclusions of manganese, silicon and iron in the immediate sub-surface region i.e. 5-15% of the depth to the centre of the bar. The steel may be prepared by adding lead to a steel melt in a closed ladle in the presence of an atmosphere above the melt less oxidizing than the atmosphere outside the ladle said atmosphere being provided by inert gas (e.g. argon) which is injected to stir the melt during the lead adding step and which is removed from the ladle during the lead adding step, the lead containing melt being ingot or strand cast and hot-rolled. The free machining steel may be of composition:- C 0À03-1À03 Mn 0À25-1À65 S 0À01-0À5 P 0À005-0À2 Si 0À01-1 N 2 0-0À3 Cr 0 or 0À01 to 1À7 Ni 0 or 0À01 to 3À75 Mo 0 or 0À01 to 0À5 V 0-0À25 B 0-0À003 Ti 0-0À5 Zr 0-0À25 Nb 0-0À25 Al 0 or 0À005 to 0À1 Ca 0 or 0À001 to 0À02 Te 0 to 0À15 Pb 0À05 to 0À07 Fe Balance The lead micro-inclusions may comprise tellurium and may be associated with manganese sulphide inclusions.
