Abstract

1492238 Treating coal formations MOSKOV GORNY INST 23 June 1976 26092/76 Heading E1F The emission of gas and dust from a coal seam is reduced by opening up the seam through cased holes drilled from the surface; injecting fluids of different viscosity and acidity to fracture the seam; removing liquid and gaseous reaction products through the holes; injecting a suspension containing methaneoxidzing bacteria, air and a nutrient medium; and injecting a solution of a monomer or polymer with a catalyst for promoting the transition of the solution to a solid state. The hydraulic fracturing may be effected with water and at least one aqueous solution of carboxymethylcellulose, carbosolyn, sulphatespirit distillers solubles starch cellulose liquor and cellulose glycol ether, and may be followed by the injection of compressed air in an amount equal to that of the injected fracturing fluids, the compressed air being retained within the seam for at least 3 months. Eroding solutions of hydrochloric acid at a temperature of 50-60‹C, hydrofluoric acid, and anthracene or pyridine may be injected after which steam is injected and the condensate removed. The bacteria is preferably of the Methylosinus trichosporium or Methylococcus variety and used in an amount of more than 20 litres of the suspension per ton of coal at a concentration of 10<SP>6</SP>-10<SP>9</SP> cells/ ml. The bacteria suspension may be preaerated or may be injected either simultaneously or alternately with compressed air. The solidifying solution may be an aqueous solution of acrylamide with potassium persulphate or sodium hydrosulphate as the catalyst, or an aqueous solution of urea-formaldehyde resin with ammounium chloride, hydrochloric acid or oxalic acid as the catalyst.
