Abstract

1492092 Coating materials with plastics PLASTIC COATINGS Ltd 3 June 1976 [27 June 1975] 27395/75 Heading F4B [Also in Division B2] A plastics coating on the surface of an article is sintered by supporting the article on a surface of a conveyer 10, passing the conveyer through a sintering zone 16 to sinter the coating except for that portion adjacent the conveyer, which portion is kept below its flow temperature, supporting the article on a conveyer 11 so that the portion of the article adjacent the conveyer is a sintered portion, and passing the article again through a sintering zone to sinter the remaining unsintered portion of coating whilst ensuring that the already sintered portion does not reach its flow temperature. Magnetizable articles from shoot 18 fall on to conveyer 10 and their plastics powder coating is sintered by infrared heater 13, whilst the coated base of the articles is prevented from reaching the flow temperature by water-cooled contact plate 15; forced air cooling follows at 14 and the articles pass round magnetic drum 12 so that they are delivered to conveyer 11 inverted, with the unsintered powder uppermost; this is sintered by repetition of the above-described steps. In another embodiment, only one sintering zone is used, with a conveyer either side of it; one half of an article is sintered whilst held on the lefthand conveyer; the article is shifted laterally to be held on the right-hand conveyer, and the other half sintered as that conveyer travels in the return direction. In the above illustrated embodiment, if the articles are not magnetizable, a belt is used to trap them against drum 12 and thus to invert them (Fig. 4, not shown).
