Abstract
1491810 Signalling by sound waves MOBIL OIL CORP 24 Feb 1975 7612/75 Heading G4F In transmitting information from downhole in a well through liquid therein an acoustic signal of constant frequency (e.g. 15 Hz) and phase is generated downhole and the signal is altered by the information to be transmitted to shift its phase (e.g. by -180 degrees) in a time period which produces, when the signal is synchronously rectified, a time for the phase shift effectively equal to zero; the latter condition is met with a time period equal to one normal period of the acoustic signal. Information may be transmitted as a digital word, with signal phase shift being effected in response to designated bits of the word; and information may be transmitted whilst the well is being drilled. In an embodiment housing 11, Fig. 1, within drill collar 12, has a mud turbine 13 which drives an electric generator 14, electricity from which is supplied through control unit 15 to motor 16; the latter drives rotor 17 of a signal generator, valve 18, through drive train 20. Slots 17a of rotor 17 in combination with slots 19a of stator 19 effect repetitive opening and closing of valve 18 to cause an acoustic signal to be generated in the drilling mud. A transducer 22, e.g. a strain gauge, is applied to control unit 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), which includes a digital word generator. Several transducer outputs may be multiplexed. Drive train 20 includes sun and planetary gears &c. whereby a digital "1" information bit causes temporary change of the speed of rotor 17 in accordance with the invention, Fig. 3 to 5 (none shown).
