Abstract
1491076 Submerged arc welding equipment F HIRSCHMANN 11 March 1976 [11 March 1975 25 Oct 1975] 10145/75 and 43980/75 Heading H2H Underwater arc welding equipment comprises a medium frequency A.C. generator 1 positioned at a substantial distance from the point of welding and a step-down transformer 4 positioned at the point of welding and connected to the generator 1 so that the welding is effected at a fraction of the source voltage. The generator 1 is driven by an I.C. engine 2 and develops an alternating current of 400-500 Hz at 500 volts which is fed to the transformer 4 by way of a self-saturable reactor 3 and cables 7, the output of the transformer 4 being rectified by diodes 5 so that the arc welding torch 6 is fed with 35 volts D.C. The output of the reactor 3 may be controlled to have any desired characteristic rising or falling, and if desired it may be replaced with thyration or thyristor devices. Control of the reactor may be positioned either at the generator or at the welding torch and the generator may be replaced by a D.C./inverter device. The components 4, 5, 6 may be replaced in a hyperbaric chamber which can be cooled by the surrounding water.
