Abstract

1489671 Feeding sheets BELL & HOWELL CO 15 Jan 1975 [15 Jan 1974 (4)] 1773/75 Heading B8R Sheets piled on edge in a hopper 10, Figs. 2 and 3, are separated by fluted friction rollers 46 which urge the end sheet downwards into a curved portion 30, Fig. 8a, of a contour plate 14, Figs. 3, 6 and 8a, formed with a lip portion 16 having grooves 18, 20 in the upper surface 22 of the lip portion, and then force the end of the sheet upwards over the lip portion, where it is engaged by belts 50, 51 moving faster than the rollers. The belts distort the sheets downwards into the grooves 18, 20 and then into grooves 32 in tracking a plate over which the sheet is fed. When a sheet is first engaged by the belts, the rollers 46 exert a dragging force, and the sheet is gradually accelerated from rest to the speed of the belts. The tracking plate may be inclined downwardly with respect to the hopper base 24 or may be aligned therewith. The belt assembly can be pivoted upwards about pins 58 to allow access to the belts. A curved plate may cover the top and the upper part of the front surface of the pile and hold it slightly inclined backwards with respect to a plane perpendicular to the base 24.
