Abstract
1489519 Making helical seam tubes E SIEGWART 12 Nov 1975 [13 Nov 1974] 46776/75 Headings B3E and B3A Apparatus for forming helical seam tube comprises two seaming rolls 5, 6 at the point of strip entry and a circle of tube guide rolls 9 each freely rotatable on a carrier 8 pivotable about a shaft 12 perpendicular to the plane of the incoming strip. When the coiled strip is plain, each roll 9 may have a flange guiding the first strip convolution, but when as shown the strip 1 is corrugated by roll pairs 2, 3, 4, the rolls 9 have a matching profile. The seaming rolls 5, 6 may form conventional lock seam at adjacent strip edges, or may be as shown in Fig. 3, being mounted on intergeared driven shafts 16, 16<SP>1</SP> on carrier 8. In this case, the convolutions have a pitch equal to half the strip width, and interengaging corrugations are deformed to dovetail shape to connect the overlapped strips as in Specification 1,431,222. To thrust the incoming strip firmly against rollers 9 and to prevent a tendency for the tube diameter to increase, each seaming roll 5, 6, is made in two portions of decreasing diameter in the case of the inner roll 5, going in the direction of tube formation, and increasing diameter, roll 6. Similarly if the coiling pitch is one-third of strip width, the rolls are in three parts. The rolls 9 are adjustable radially of their circle in slots 19, and carrier 8 is adjustable parallel to shaft 12, to vary the diameter of coiling. The seam may alternatively be formed by a bonding agent sprayed on to the incoming strip and/or convolution being formed at the area of overlap.
