Abstract

1489473 Damped spring suspension units PNEUMATIQUES CAOUTCHOUC MANUFACTURE ET PLASTIQUES KLEBERCOLOMBES 3 Jan 1975 [4 Jan 1974 16 Oct 1974] 325/75 Heading F2S A damped spring suspension unit comprises two telescopic guide members 1, 2 and a sleeve 4 of cellular elastomeric material surrounding one member 1 and acted upon by the other member 2 in such a way that it acts as a compression spring and also provides damping in both directions of telescopic movement firstly by friction between the sleeve 4 and the enclosed member 1 and secondly by losses within the sleeve. Three embodiments show the telescopic members 1, 2 being guided by means of a partspherical member 23, of polyethylene or rubber sliding either in the outer member 2 as in Fig. 2 or in the inner member 1 as in Figs. 5 and 7 (not shown). The sleeve 4 may comprise a plurality of spigotted pieces, Fig. 6 (not shown), and may be of cellular polyurethane of specific gravity between 0À45 and 0À55. The inner member may have an external coating of a plastics material, e.g. polyamide. The outer telescopic member 2 may be of cellular elastomer, either spigotted to the sleeve 4, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), or integral with it, and serving additionally as a flexible end stop. The sleeve 4 may have an irregular external shape to give non-linear characteristics, e.g. by circumferential grooves. Figs. 1 and 4 (not shown) illustrate the suspension unit incorporated into vehicle suspension systems.
