Abstract

1489431 Microporous coatings L FAL CONE 21 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 50509/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A microporous plastics article is obtained by depositing a layer of a solution of polymer in a solvent on or within a support, depositing a layer of coagulant comprising a liquid in which the polymer is insoluble and a diluent in contact with the layer of polymer solution, allowing the polymer solvent to pass from the polymer layer into the coagulant layer and the non-solvent liquid to pass from the coagulant layer into the polymer layer for a sufficient time for the polymer to become at least partially coagulated and removing by mechanical means the liquid layer of coagulant. By mechanical means is meant removal of the liquid in the liquid phase without use of a washing step. The polymers are preferably elastomers and most preferably polyurethane elastomers, which may be used alone or in mixtures with minor amounts of other compatible polymers. Polyester type and polyether type polyurethane elastomers may be used. In the Figure a chamber 2 having a polymer inlet 2P and solvent inlet 2S is connected by a duct V2 to a coating head 3 where said layer of polymer is applied to the support SR which may consist of silicone coated paper or steel in the form of an endless belt passing over rollers. A chamber 4 having a water inlet, a solvent or diluent inlet D4 and a thickener inlet AD is connected by a duct 4V to a coating head 5 for coating the layer of coagulant onto the layer of polymer. A scraper blade 6 provide means for removing the layer of coagulant from the least partially coagulant polymer layer. Alternatively the polymer may be padded into a textile material.
