Abstract

1489408 Organic electrolyte cells YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORP 17 Dec 1974 [21 March 1974] 54417/74 Heading H1B An electrolytic cell comprises an anode of a metal less noble than zinc, a cathode consisting of carbonaceous particles intimately mixed with chromium trioxide particles and held together by a fluorocarbon resin binder, an organic electrolyte and a separator between the anode and the cathode. The CrO 3 and the carbonaceous particles such as acetylene black, graphite or carbon black are mixed with the P.T.F.E. binder in a blender. The mixture is then spread on to an expanded nickel support and pressed. Alternatively, the carbonaceous particles may be wetted with ethyl or methyl alcohol, made into a thick paste with water, mixed with an aqueous suspension of P.T.F.E. and then dried. The dried powder is then mixed with CrO 3 in a ball mill and the material pressed on to the expanded metal current collector. The anode of the cell may be lithium, magnesium or aluminium and the electrolyte may be a mixture of lithium perchlorate and propylene carbonate or butyrolactone and lithium bromide, or dimethoxy ethane with tetrahydrofuran and lithium hexafluoroarsenate. The separator consists of a microporous sheet of polypropylene or propylene.
