Abstract
1489096 Derivatives of cyclohexyl or cyclohexenyl methanol UOP Inc 31 Dec 1974 56126/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a compound of the formula wherein R is a C 3 -C 20 alkyl group, R<SP>1</SP> is a non-aromatic carbocyclic ring having at least 6 C atoms, e.g. cyclohexyl or cyclohexenyl and X is SO 3 M, OSO 3 M, (OC n H 2n ) m OH, where M is alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or a basic nitrogen compound; n is 2 or 3 and m is 1 to 50. They may be obtained by (a) reacting a conjugated diene with allyl chloride or allyl alcohol, optionally hydrogenating the ring formed by the reaction; (b) ring alkylating the resulting optionally hydrogenated product with an olefin in the presence of a free-radical generating compound and HCl, optionally hydrogenating the said ring if not previously hydrogenated after the alkylation; (c) reacting the resulting optionally hydrogenated alkylsubstituted product when chloromethyl substituted with an alkali metal salt of an oxygen acid of sulphur to provide a group of the formula -SO 3 M or -OSO 3 M; or when hydroxymethyl substituted with a sulphating agent followed by neutralization of the resulting sulphate ester to provide a group of the formula -OSO 3 M, with an alkoxylating agent to provide a group of the formula -(OC n H 2n ) m OH, optionally followed by reaction with a sulphating agent and neutralizing the resulting sulphate ester to provide a group of the formula -(OC n H 2n ) m OSO 3 M. The products are useful as biodegradable detergents.
