Abstract

1488507 Power plant HAWTHORN LESLIE (ENGS) Ltd 25 June 1975 [4 July 1974 16 Sept 1974] 29715/74 and 40266/74 Heading F1Q [Also in Divisions B7 and F2] A transmission between an electric motor 10 or alternator and a diesel engine output shaft 11 which includes a scoop trimmed fluid coupling 12 and a gear box 13 is controlled by means which commence filling the coupling 12 when the engine speed exceeds 82% of maximum speed. As shown in a power augmentation unit for a ship the transmission electric motor 10 is energized from an alternator driven by a turbine which is driven by steam generated by utilizing waste heat from the exhaust of the diesel engine. The electric motor 10 drives through the fluid coupling 12, reduction gear box 13 and a flexible coupling 14 to provide additional power to the diesel engine output shaft 11. The fluid level in the fluid coupling and thus the torque transmitted from the motor 10 to the shaft 11 is controlled by a scoop tube 16 which is actuated hydraulically under electronic control to commence filling the coupling when the speed of the engine exceeds 82% of maximum speed at which the output of the alternator exceeds the normal electrical requirements of the ship. The transmission may, as shown, drive the diesel engine crank-shaft or may alternatively be connected to any shaft between the engine and propellor. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the diesel engine drives through a friction clutch, step-up gear box and scoop trimmed fluid coupling an alternator which provides the ships electrical requirements when the engine speed exceeds 85% of maximum speed.
