1488303 Harvesting beet WILHELM STOLL MASCHINENFABRIK GmbH 10 June 1975 [25 June 1974] 24881/75 Heading A1F In a device for lifting, and removing earth from, beets, the beets, which are lifted by a lifting unit 6 comprising a pair of shares 7 converging in the direction opposite to the direction of travel 4 of the device frame 5, are shuttled to and fro transversely of the direction of frame travel, as they traverse the lifting unit. by a driven rotor 9, positioned above the lifting unit, and which carries a number of deflector elements 14 positioned to one side and the other of the centre line of the lifting unit in the direction of travel. Each share 7 has an arcuate surface which faces the rotor 9 and which is substantially concentric with the rotor. In the embodiment shown, the beets 3 are shuttled to and fro below a guard member 19, and between the shares 7 by the elements 14 carried on the facing surfaces of the hubs 16 of the rotor 9. The elements 14 comprise pivotally adjustable and removable forks with peripheral tines which allow earth to escape between the hubs 16 and shares 7. In another embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the position of the forward end of the lifting unit 6 can be adjusted to cope with varying degrees of soil wetness, and the deflector elements comprise a pair of inclined and parallel plates of adjustable separation. The deflector elements may also take the form of demountable pivotally mounted curved bars on the inner hub faces, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown); demountable pivotably mounted bars having flexible edges, and mounted on the inner hub faces.
