Abstract

1488094 Decaborane(14) UNION CARBIDE CORP 24 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 3169/75 Heading ClA The preparation of decaborane (14) comprises contacting in a solvent and in an inert atmosphere, at a temperature of 100‹ to 120‹ C. either (a) a metal borohydride MBH 4 , where M = Na<SP>+</SP>, K<SP>+</SP>, Rb<SP>+</SP>, Cs<SP>+</SP>, Li<SP>+</SP>, or (b) an octahydrotriborate MB 2 H 8 where M = above mentioned ions and also C 1 -C 4 alkyl ammonium ions, with boron trifluoride ar a boron trifluoride dialkyletherate to form the tetradecahydroundecaborate B 11 H 14 - ion, said boron trifluoride or boron trifluoride dialkyl etherate being used in a mole ratio of from 5 : x, where x is #6, when using MBH 4 , but in a mole ratio of 1 : y, where y is #1, when using MB 3 H 8 , and contacting in an inert atmosphere-the B 11 H 14 - with an oxidizing agent having an electrode potential of at least 0À6 volts, and recovering the decaborane (14). Suitable oxidizing agents include potassium permanganate, sodium dichromate and perbenzoic acid, the oxidation temperature being preferably from - 10‹ to 50‹ C. Suitably the oxidation is effected in the presence of an inert solvent which is used to extract the decaborane (14), e.g. benzene or toluene. There preparation may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. ethers such as diglycine boiling at or above 100‹ C. Suitable dialkyletherates may have alkyl groups containing 1-4 carbon atoms, e.g. BF 3 -diethyletherate, and a suitable MB 3 H 8 compound is tetraethylaminooctahydrotriborate.
