1487981 Grinding; machine tool details DYNABRADE Inc 22 Jan 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 2730/75 Headings B3D and B3B A grinding tool 10 for use with a grinding element 20 which has an end progressively worn away by engagement with a workpiece, is of elongated generally cylinderical configuration and has a coaxially extending opening 20<SP>1</SP>, comprises a rotatably supported drive tube 16 for accommodating the element, a mandrel 84 conforming to the opening 20<SP>1</SP>, means for rotating the tube, and looking means 22 for releasably clamping the element to the tube. The tube 16 is mounted in bearings 24 in a casing 12 and is driven by a belt drive 36, 38, 40 from an air motor 30. The forward end of tube 16 is provided with the locking means 22 for the grinding element which may be in the form in a bonded wheel or a winding of coated abrasive material. The locking means 22 consists of a clamping member 50 screw threaded on the tube so as to compress a resilient member 52 into engagement with the element. The clamping member 50 also secures the flange 82a of a sleeve 82 against the end of tube 16, the sleeve being rigidly secured by a disc 86 to the mandrel 84 which extends through the opening 20<SP>1</SP> of the element to support the element. The arrangement permits elements of different external diameter to be held in the tool. In another embodiment, the mandrel is mounted by a disc directly to the tube 16. A latch device 26 is provided for preventing rotation of the tube during clamping of the element. The sleeve 82 may be removed so that the tool will hold elements without axial openings 20<SP>1</SP>.
