Abstract

1486867 Porous sheets of thermoplastic polymer CHLORIDE GROUP Ltd 23 April 1976 [25 April 1975] 17269/75 Heading C3C A porous sheet is made by forming a plastic mass of a thermoplastic polymer, particulate removable filler and an extractable organic solvent or plasticizer, forming the mixture into a sheet, removing the solvent or plasticizer by extraction with a fluorinated hydrocarbon which is liquid at ambient temperature and has a b.p. above 45‹ C. under atmospheric pressure, treating the extracted sheet to remove the fluorinated hydrocarbon and to remove the removable filler. In the examples mixtures of polyvinyl chloride, isophorone (3,3,5-trimethyl)cyclohexene - 2 - one - 1 and kerosone with particles of starch, ammonium sulphate or anhydrous sodium sulphate, and optionally glycerine were formed at elevated temperature and high shear, and the resultant powders were extruded to form sheets which were then passed through a bath of dichloromonofluoro-difluoromonochloroethane to leach out the isophorone/kerosene mixture, and then the sheet was passed into hot water to evaporate off the fluorinated hydrocarbon and the water-soluble fillers, and when starch is used as filler the sheet is then passed into boiling water to swell the starch (thereby producing rupturing of walls encapsulating the starch) and the starch is then removed from the sheet in a hydrolysis medium which is aqueous sulphuric acid. The polyvinyl chloride may be plasticized with a chlorosulphonated polyethylene of a nitrile rubber, which are not leached out during the above process.
