Abstract

1486325 Aqueous polyesterimide dispersions MITSUBISHI DENKI KK 22 Nov 1974 50803/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division C7] A process for producing a water dispersion varnish suitable for electrodeposition comprises providing an initial polyesterimide having ester, imide, free carboxyl and optionally amide groups and: (a) reacting it with an organic at least di-hydroxy compound; (b) simultaneously or subsequently reacting it with a polyfunctional acid or anhydride in the absence of a solvent to produce a final polyesterimide; (c) forming a solution of the final polyesterimide in a solvent which is at least partly volatile; (d) dispersing the solution in an aqueous-solution containing a surfactant and a volatile base; and (e) removing by volatilization part or all of the solvent and base to give a water dispersion varnish of pH up to 8À0. The initial polyesterimide may be derived from 9 to 49 equivalent per cent dibasic acid; 5 to 40% at least tricarboxylic acid anhydride; 16 to 48% aliphatic monoalcohol ester of aromatic dicarboxylic acid; up to 40% of an at least triol and 2À5 to 60% diamine. Materials used in subsequent steps may be: (a) ethylene, propylene or diethylene glycol, tris(hydroxyethyl)isocyanurate or a polyester with free OH groups; (b) adipic, maleic, trimellitic or iso-, tere- or tetrahydro-phthalic acid or anhydride; (c) ethylene dichloride, dioxane, MEK, acetone, m-cresol, N-methylpyrrolidone or dimethylformamide, -acetamide or -sulphoxide; and (d) ammonia, trimethylamine, monoethanolamine or alpha-dimethyl aminoethanolamine. In specific examples the polymers are deposited on copper plate or wire at a D.C. voltage of 20 volts. Reference is made to Specifications 1,354,532 and 1,354,531.
