Abstract
1485954 Sulphur recovery; H 2 S removal BRITISH GAS CORP 16 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 58748/73 Heading C1A Elemental sulphur is removed from aqueous slurries or suspensions by mixing with an organic liquid to form a non-permanent emulsion, allowing the emulsion to break to form an upper, substantially sulphur-free aqueous phase, a dewetted substantially sulphur-saturated organic phase below the aqueous phase and a bottom phase consisting of elemental dewetted sulphur, the three phases being separated from one another; the organic liquid is substantially water-insoluble, has a density between 1À20 and 2À07 g./ml. is a partial solvent for sulphur at the temperature at which the emulsion breaks, and has a boiling point substantially lower than that of sulphur. The process may form part of a process for freeing gases and liquid hydrocarbon mixtures from H 2 S in the Stretford process. In the examples, the organic liquid is o-dichlorobenzene, other organic liquids specified are sym-tribromobenzene, halogenated naphthalenes, e.g. α-dichloronaphthalene, and dialkylsulphides, e.g. dimethyldisulphide.
