Abstract

1485768 Advancing and twisting yarn by hot fluid into stuffer box crimper IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Nov 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 56777/73 Heading D1F Thermoplastic yarn is crimped by forwarding and twisting the yarn by the action of hot fluid, and impinging the forwarded yarn against a yarn wad in a stuffer box. The forwarding and twisting may comprise directing at least one stream of hot fluid; e.g. air or steam, towards a yarn at an acute angle to its axis. As shown, Fig. 1, yarn passing through conduit 1 is forwarded and twisted by a vortex created by four equispaced, hotfluid channels 13 entering chamber 9, Fig. 2. The twisted yarn is thereby passed through conduit 5 into stuffing chamber 7 from which fluid escapes via radial holes 23. Withdrawn yarn is cooled by cold fluid, e.g. air, passed through at least two, e.g. six, channels 29. Chamber 7 has hemispherical or conical end 21. The treatment of drawn polyamide yarn is exemplified. Some yarn filaments may be heat fused by the process. Yarn is passed through a tensioning nip, a slot in a vane assembly rotatable about a horizontal axis, and a wind up. Twist changes in the yarn cause the yarn and hence the vane assembly to rotate during wind up. Four photo-electric devices mounted at 90‹ intervals in a perpendicular plane measure vane rotation and hence yarn twist,
