Abstract
1485664 Adjusting tappet clearances in I.C. engines FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 March 1975 [11 April 1974] 12004/75 Heading G1M A method of adjusting the tappet clearance of a valve 2 includes connecting a compressed air supply 7 to a spark-plug hole 3 of a cylinder 1 to build up pressure therein, and starting with the valve 2 closed, turning a valve tappet adjuster screw 5 by means of a tool handle 17 until the pressure in the chamber 1 has fallen by a pre-determined amount. As the handle 17 is operated, the load on a pressure sensor 20 causes it to supply an electric signal to close a valve 15 and the lower side of a piston 12. When the pressure drops to the required value due to the valve being opened further the pressure on the upper side of the differential piston 12 is correspondingly reduced so that the piston moves upwardly against spring-bias to close a switch 16 and de-energize an electromagnetic clutch 19 in the torque drive thus automatically halting the screw adjustment. The tappet clearance or gap may then be set by turning the adjuster back through a specific angle. The gap may also be set by using a feeler gauge 23 slightly greater in thickness than the required gap, the thickness being such that when the predetermined pressure drop occurs the valve is slightly open and the tappet is adjusted to a slightly larger gap which closes a little when the valve re-seats.
