Abstract
1485503 Well drilling VETCO OFFSHORE INDUSTRIES INC 27 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 28592/74 Heading E1F A drilling vessel supports a drill string via a hydraulic piston and cylinder unit communicating with a pneumatic-hydraulic accumulator in which the volume of liquid is maintained constant, in spite of relative movement of the piston and cylinder as caused by wave action &c, so that the pressure in the cylinder and consequently the weight on the bit remains constant, liquid being transferred between the accumulator and a reservoir automatically to maintain a constant volume thereof in the accumulator. In the system shown, the cylinder 4 carries a split travelling block 5 and the piston 8 supports the kelly 12 via a tubular rod 9 receiving a piston 13 on a rod 17 depending from the cylinder head. There are thus two concentric annular pressure chambers in the cylinder, the outer chamber communicating direct with accumulator 30 while the inner chamber 18 communicates with accumulator 30a and with port 57 of a 3-way valve 20 operable to connect port 57 to either of ports 60, 62. A reference pressure established by accumulator 34 is sensed by transducer 36, the pressures in the two annular chambers are sensed by transducers 40, 41 and the load on hook 10 is sensed by transducer 35, these transducers supplying electrical signals e 1 -e 4 respectively to comparators 42-45 (Fig. 3) of which comparators 42, 43 control switches 65-68. When the vessel is rising and liquid tends to be displaced back into the accumulator 30, the consequent pressure rise causes signals e 2 , e 3 to exceed e., whereby switches 65, 68 are closed and valves 23, 25 opened so that liquid from the accumulator 30 can pass to reservoir 21, the valve 20 at this stage having its ports 57, 60 interconnected. When the vessel is falling and liquid tends to be drawn from the accumulator, the consequent pressure drop causes signals e 2 , e 3 to fall below e 1 , whereby switches 66, 67 are closed and valve 22 is opened so that liquid is supplied to accumulator 30 by pump 24 or accumulator 24', the valve 20 having its ports 57, 62 interconnected at this stage. Valve 20 is of the type including a relay spool and a pilot flapper controlled by opposed coils. Instead of operating valve 20 in a bang-bang mode via switches 65, 66, it may be controlled by a differential amplifier 45a so as to meter addition of fluid to or its removal from the accumulator system at a rate proportional to the difference between e 1 and e 2
