Abstract
1483538 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems GLOBAL MARINE Inc 9 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 43717/74 Heading G3P [Also in Divisions B8 and E1] A heave compensator, e.g. for maintaining a substantially constant support force on a drill string suspended from a floating vessel despite heaving movement of the vessel, includes displaceable means between the vessel and the drill string, passive means operating the displaceable means for maintaining the support force within pre-selected limits of variation, and active assist means responsive to predetermined variations in the support force for actively assisting the passive means to maintain the support force within said pre-selected limits. As described, the drill string (not shown) is suspended from a hook 38 fixed to a piston 36 movable in a cylinder 34 secured to the travelling block (not shown) of a derrick on board the vessel. The space 37 below piston 36 is filled with hydraulic fluid and is connected by flexible hose 44 to the left-hand side of a pneumo-hydraulic accumulator 42. The right-hand side of accumulator 42 is connected by line 66 to a bank 62 of compressed air bottles 64, this arrangement constituting the passive means for maintaining the load on hook 38 within pre-selected limits of variation, e.g. 2%, for small heave amplitudes of the vessel. The active assist means is constituted by a cylinder 58 containing hydraulic fluid which acts on the closed face 52 and annular end-face 54 of a hollow rod 50 connected to the piston 46 of the accumulator 42. The cylinder 58 is connected by line 92 to an accumulator 96 and to a three-way valve 88 which normally closes line 92 so that during small amplitude heaves the pressure of fluid in accumulator 96 and hence cylinder 58 is determined by regulator 110. Should the pressure in left-hand side of accumulator vary by more than a pre-selected amount, e.g. during high amplitude heaves, a pressure sensor 98 in line 100 operates valve 88. If the pressure in accumulator 42 increases beyond a pre-selected limit valve 88 connects the cylinder 58 to a reservoir 82 via line 92 to dump the pressure fluid in cylinder 58, and if the pressure in accumulator 42 decreases valve 88 connects the cylinder 58 to a source of high-pressure fluid e.g. pump 76. Thus hydraulic assist cylinder 58 serves to maintain the pressure in cylinder 34 within preselected limits. The valve 88 may also be operated by an accelerometer 122 which senses high amplitude heaves of the vessel.
