Abstract
1485451 Power assisted cycles; anti-theft devices LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 17 June 1975 [28 June 1974 10 Aug 1974] 28776/74 and 35350/74 Headings B7H and B7J A cycle is provided with an electric motor 19 which is actuated by a switch 26 when the upper run of the chain 17 is tensioned and drives the chain wheel 15 via a belt or chain 23. The motor is connected to a frame mounted battery 25 via a handle bar twist grip switch so the cycle may be pedalled normally. With the manual switch closed pedalling force tensions the chain upper run and the motor is actuated and its driving force is sufficient to maintain the tension. To stop the motor the rider opens the manual switch, or opposes the motor drive through the pedals to detension the chain; although the motor drive is sufficient to maintain the chain tension, bumps in the ground surface may be sufficient to detension the chain. An antitheft device comprising a key operated switch for disconnecting the battery may be provided. This device may incorporate means for locking the rear wheel and battery retaining straps. The motor is provided at the output pulley 21 with a free wheel mechanism to allow the cycle to be pedalled normally.
