Abstract

1485416 Milling; workpiece supporting AVONDALE SHIPYARDS Inc 8 Aug 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 35058/74 Addition to 1398181 Headings B3K and B3B In a process of machining large complex curved workpieces, e.g. a marine propeller 18, the workpiece is supported on apparatus comprising a vertical column 11 movable vertically (V movement) by an hydraulic ram 90, a support table 54 through which the column 11 moves and which supports the column for rotation about its vertical axis (C movement), and is movable horizontally along tracks to move the column sideways (W movement), the column 11 having a U-shaped upper portion 12 carrying a trunnion 13 mounted housing 24 pivoted through 90 degrees by fluid pressure rams 16 (B movement), the housing 24 carrying a rotatable face plate 14 (A movement) in which the propeller is mounted. The said apparatus is sited so as the column can be moved adjacent a boring mill 30 having a cutting tool 31 movable in three mutually perpendicular directions X, Y, Z. The propeller is lowered on to the face plate 14 when in its horizontal position, and the face plate is then rotated 90 degrees to present a blade for machining in a vertical orientation. During machining the various movements X, Y, Z of the boring mill, and A, B, C, V, W of the workpiece support apparatus are controlled through computer programme and N.C. means to ensure that the workpiece surface being machined is substantially perpendicular to the cutting tool spindle. The column 11 retracts into a pit 36 and the support plate 54 runs along tracks on either side of the pit opening. The propeller 18 can first be mounted on a support plate (200) (Figs. 16-22, not shown) by means of support members (210) which are bolted to the plate (200) and to which the propeller is adhered by means of an epoxy resin thermo-setting compound (242), (244). An electric strip heating element (240) is embedded in the compound so that heat can be applied to release the propeller after machining.
