Abstract
1485201 Valves C R OLSEN 11 April 1975 14958/75 Heading F2V [Also in Division E1] A normally open valve for one-time operation, e.g. in an oil-well drilling rig, comprises a metallic bladder 20 folded back upon itself in a crushed valve-open condition so that obstruction to flow is at a minimum. When uncrushed, the bladder is of tubular form sealing the flow passageways. To close the valve a piston 30 is driven along the tube by electrically igniting a squib 40 which in turn ignites an inhibited propellant 50. This drives the piston at a controlled slow rate to prevent shock waves in the controlled fluid. The squib may produce all the propellant gas without the inhibited propellant 50. Alternatively the bladder may be operated from a fluid pressure source. Fig. 9 (not shown) discloses an embodiment in which in the valve-open condition the folded bladder lies to one side of the fluid passageway.
