Abstract

1485187 Abrasive products NORTON CO 15 Jan 1975 [15 Jan 1974] 1730/75 Heading C4V A hard dense ceramic wheel for the finish grinding of spheres for ball bearings, has a composition comprising a clay component in the ceramic bond in the range 10-30% by weight of the dry mix from which the wheel is made, a crystalline alumina filler present in the bond in an amount at least 15% by weight of the dry mix, particles of said filler being less than 44 microns maximum size in their longest dimension, abrasive grits in the bond being coarser than the filler and of size 80-grit and finer based on the U.S. Standard Screens, the abrasive grits being of Al 2 O 3 and being present in a range of from 10-50% by weight of the dry mix, the bond and abrasive mix including at least 5-9% by weight of manganese oxide (calibrated as MnO 2 ), the wheel having a modulus of elasticity of from 110 Î 10<SP>10</SP> dynes/ cm.<SP>2</SP> to 180 Î 10<SP>10</SP> dynes/cm.<SP>2</SP>, and a density of 2À8 to 3À25 grams/cm.<SP>3</SP> The filler may be alumina dust collector fines and/or Bayer alumina. The clay eompoennt may be a bone clay. The filler is preferably present in the range 15-60% of the dry mix and 0À5 to 3À0% by weight of soda may be present.
