Abstract
1484811 Metal oxides and sulphur dioxide from sulphates METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 14 Jan 1975 [17 Jan 1974] 1594/75 Heading C1A Metal sulphates are split into the metal oxide and sulphur dioxide in a fluidized bed of metal oxide which is kept at a temperature above the splitting temperature of the sulphate but below the sinter temperature of the metal oxide produced, the sulphate is supplied in a molten, solution, solid or suspended form below the surface of the fluidized bed which has a height when stationary of from 300 to 800 mm. and wherein the speed of the fluidizing gas with respect to the cross-section of the reactor is adjusted to a value W G where where W G is the speed of the gas in metres per second and # is the density of the metal oxide of the bed in grams per c.c. The sulphate may be present in a salt-containing waste acid; iron and aluminium sulphates in sulphuric acid are exemplified. The sulphur dioxide produced may be reconverted into sulphuric acid free from salt contaminants. Mention is made of the treatment of sulphates of nickel, cobalt, magnesium, manganese and chromium; the treatment of mixtures of sulphates is stated as producing mixed oxides.
