Abstract

1484567 Self - drilling fasteners GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd 8 Nov 1974 [18 Aug 1973 20 Dec 1973] 39156/73 and 59142/73 Heading F2H [Also in Division B3] A drill point is provided on a fastener (e.g. a screw) blank by forming two diametrically opposed straight (not helical flutes 12 and two planar faces 17 intersecting each other at 18 and intersecting the sides of the flutes to form cutting edges at 19 and lip clearance angles behind each cutting edge. The drill point 18 may be made where the flutes most nearly approach each other or slightly above or below that region. Further planar surfaces 20 may be provided parallel to the axis, or slightly inclined to give a greater width at the free end and a turning operation may be carried out to reduce the diameter as indicated at 23 and this also may have a slight taper. The flutes 12 are formed hot or cold between dies and the surfaces 20 may be formed in the same operation. Alternatively the surfaces 20 may be machined, possibly in the same operation as the faces 17.
