Abstract

1427599 Rolling threads GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 36509/73 Heading B3M [Also in Division F2] A nail having a shank with a point 11, 12 at each end and two gripping portions 13, 15, the portion 13 comprising a series of alternating annular grooves and ribs, and the portion 15 comprising a drive screw formation, is made by simultaneously rolling the two gripping formations 13, 15 on a plain cylindrical blank, using a thread rolling machine having reciprocating dies. Preferably the blank is first provided with a head at one end and a pinch-formed point at the other end, the head enabling the blank to pass along feed rails, suspended by its head, to the thread rolling machine. In this case the dies are provided with shear pointing formations to sever the head and form the second point as the formations 13, 15 are rolled. An annular flange 17 may be formed at the middle of the shank.
