Abstract

1483993 Surface wave amplification STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 25 March 1976 12012/76 Heading H3U Surface waves propagating between an input and an output transducer or a piezoelectric body are amplified by a semi-conductor diode connected to an intermediate transducer. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, tunnel diodes 16 are connected to a plurality of intermediate transducers 15, with respective D.C. biases being applied at points A. Each diode may be provided with an RC damping network. The transducers 15 are spaced to give a mutual phase delay of (2r+ 1)#/2. Fig. 3, not shown, depicts an alternative shunt connection of a diode between two arbitrarily-spaced transducers. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, a pumping frequency signal, e.g. at twice the signal frequency, is applied at X to a varactor diode 46 terminated in an idler frequency transducer 47. Absorber material 48 is provided between adjacent transducers 47. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pumping signal is applied to the diodes by transducer 57a transmitting surface waves to transducers 57 which are connected to respective varactor diodes 56.
