Abstract

1483214 Friction hinge PLESSEY CO Ltd 7 July 1975 [1 Aug 1974] 33937/74 Heading E2F In a friction hinge for joining two parts together such that the parts can be maintained in various positions with respect to' each other by friction generated in the hinge, the hinge comprises a male portion 6 rotatable in a female portion 4, the male portion 6 being provided with protuberences 26 provided on a tapered insert portion 22 mounted on a pin portion 20, the protuberences 26 being able to rest in recesses 14 in a tapered bore 34 of the female portion 4. As a screw 30 is tightened, the female portion 4 is drawn further onto the pin portion 20 as the insert portion 22, which is provided with an internal screwed bore 28, is drawn onto the slotted pin portion 20. As illustrated, a flange 18 provided on the male portion 6 is adapted to be fitted into a slot in the base of a record player (not shown) and a flange 8 provided on the female portion 4 is adapted to be fixed to part of a perspex cover. When the record player cover is closed on the base, the protuberences 26 will pass out of the slots 14 and the cover will be closed upon the base. As the cover is opened, the protuberences 26 will pass out of the slots 14 and will frictionally engage 'the internal surface of the tapered bore 34. Boring earth &c D E SABLE 7 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48179/74 Heading E1F A protector for a well tool joint includes a rigid cylindrical member or mandrel, internal resilient compression means in the mandrel and an inwardly directed flange which engages shoulders 30, 33 at the joint for limiting longitudinal movement of the protector. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 3, 4) the protector 120 consists of a rigid mandrel 135 of steel having an inwardly directed flange 157, resilient compression members 141 located between box section 21 and mandrel 135, and an outer resilient sleeve 139. In use the protector 120 is forced over the box section 21 of the joint when the two parts of the joint are screwed together, the members 141 being compressed and the flange 157 being trapped between the shoulders 30, 33 of the joint. In a modification (not shown) the outer sleeve 139 is omitted and the mandrel 135 is made of thicker mild steel. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7) the protector 220 consists of an inner sleeve 224 having an internal diameter equal to or slightly greater than the external diameter of joint part 26 and having an internal flange 229, an external flange 225 and apertures therethrough, a rigid mandrel 221 having flanges 222, 228, a compressible member 223 between the sleeve 224 and mandrel 221, and outer resilient sleeve 226. The flanges 228, 229 are initially separated and when the joint is made the flanges 228, 229 are forced together by the shoulders on the joint, thus causing the compressible member 223 to be compressed between flanges 222, 225 and to be forced through the apertures in the inner sleeve 224 into contact with joint 26.
