Abstract

1483208 Bi-polar pressure cell F GOTZ 1 Oct 1974 42571/74 Heading C7B The cell, for electrolysis of e.g. KOH to H2 and O 2 , comprises a plurality of open topped concentric tubular bi-polar electrodes 71 of increasing diameters arranged in a pressure pot 70 and embedded at their lower ends in insulating material 79. The pot may have a planar or hemispherical base and be of steel or nickelled steel. A quartz-epoxy resin insulation may be used with the optional further use of foam rubber spacing rings. Small holes 78, staggered by 180 degrees between adjacent electrodes, allow electrolyte level equalization. The central electrode may be internally cooled and fins (61, 62), Fig. 1 (not shown) may extend from one or more other electrodes for cooling and electrical connection. Further cooling may be provided by forming some electrodes with double walls for internal cooling, or by attaching coiled Cu pipes to the outside of the vessel, as by tin-dipping or epoxy resin. The interelectrode spaces may have the same liquid capacity. Instead of monopolar outer electrodes the tubular electrode midway between the cell casing and axis may be monopolar, the inner and outer electrodes then forming counter electrodes giving a series-parallel arrangement of individual cells. Fe or Ni electrodes are specified.
