Abstract

1483175 Automatic chokes for IC engines HONDA GIKEN KOGYO KK 3 June 1975 23995/75 Heading F1H In order that a throttle 15 of an automatic choke assembly may be held open to a.greater extent at lower engine temperatures when starting, there is provided a fast idle cam 18 with an extra cam surface 18b brought into operation at low temperatures by a link 21, 22, 23 operated by a reversible pulse motor 5 which link can operate independently of a choke 2. The choke 2 is also operated by the reversible pulse motor 5 by means of a coupling which is resilient in respect of one direction of rotation of the pulse motor 5. Before starting the choke 2 is fully open and upon switching on the ignition circuit, a control means 4 rotates the motor anticlockwise so that a pawl 20 entrains link 21 to rotate the fast idle cam 18 to bring cam surface 18a beneath the throttle cam follower 17a. The torque from motor 5 is transmitted through a spring from a shaft 6 to a shaft 3 to close the choke 2. If the engine is very cold then the motor 5 rotates further anti-clockwise to bring the cam surface 18b beneath the follower 17a thus opening the throttle 15 further; the further rotation of shaft 6 being taken up by winding up the spring 7 since the choke 2 remains closed. Upon operating the starter, the motor 5 rotates clockwise so that pawl 9 engages pawl 8, thus rotating shaft 3 clockwise and opening the choke 2 to a part-open position which is maintained until the engine fires. Thereafter the choke 2 is opened automatically by clockwise rotation of the motor 5 at a rate controlled by the control means 4 until it is fully open when the engine is warm. To ensure proportionality of throttle and choke openings as the throttle is opened by anti-clockwise motion, a projection 25 on a cam follower lever 17 bears against the cam 18 to rotate it clockwise, moving a link 26, with a lost motion slot 27, upwardly, thus lifting a link 14 and opening the choke 2.
