Abstract
1482727 Tube expanding; welding by pressure IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 April 1976 [27 June 1975] 27292/75 Headings B3J and B3R A metal tube 10 is expanded by detonation of a flame-sensitive explosive charge 19 to which a flame is conducted along the bore of a non- metallic tube 15 by burning a deflagrating material 24 so distributed along the bore of tube 15 as to leave a continuous flame propagation channel between the material 24 and the internal wall of the tube. The end of one tube may be expanded within the end of a larger tube, or into a tube-plate 12 or nozzle. Tube-ends may be expanded singly, consecutively or simultaneously, and welds will be produced if sufficient explosive is used. The explosive 19 may be lead azide which may be used with a secondary explosive 18 such as pentaerythritol tetranitrate, both being compressed directly into the end of the polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or nylon tube 15, or inserted therein in separate containers. The deflagrating material 24 may be granular but is preferably a textile yarn or tape having black powder bonded thereon, or thin strands of cordite. The material 24 may be ignited by an electric fuse-head or, as shown, an incendiary composition 21 consisting of an oxidizing agent, a reducing agent and a binding agent contained in the end of tube 15 or in a metal capsule 20 taped 22 to the end of the tube 15. A slot 23 receives a loop of igniter cord.
