Abstract

1482594 Regulating IC engines NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd 22 July 1974 [11 Aug 1973] 32282/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division G3] I.C. engine fuel injection valves are opened for a time electronically determined in response at least to the oxygen content in the exhaust of a selected number of cylinders which are supplied via a first fuel pressure regulator operating at a different pressure to that of a second pressure regulator supplying the remaining cylinders. It is explained that the oxygen detector is sensitive over a very limited range of the air/fuel ratio Fig. 2, (not shown), which is richer than is required; by using this in a proportion of the cylinders only and providing a leaner mixture for the remainder the average ratio can be equal to the required value. In the embodiment the left hand cylinder only is selected. The oxygen content of its exhaust is measured at 19 and used, together with the signal from an inlet manifold pressure detector 23, to control the open time of the injector valves 2 and 3, for all the cylinders.(The right hand valve is shown in detail). The left hand cylinder only is supplied via fuel pressure regulator 9, the pressure being determined by the inlet manifold pressure and the rate of a spring; the remaining cylinders are supplied via a similar regulator 11 but which has a weaker spring and so provides a lower pressure. The regulators are of the type in which the injectors are supplied from the inlet chamber and a diaphragm variably obstructs an orifice through which excess fuel is returned to a supply tank. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the two regulators are in series, supplied from a single pump instead of the two 7, 8, the excess from the first supplying the second. The electronic controller 1, also Fig. 4 (not shown), comprises logic elements arranged as a flip-flop which is set to "0" by pulses from a crank-shaft switch 25, whereupon a constant voltage is integrated until its value exceeds that of the combined voltage from sensors 19 and 23, re-setting the flip-flop to "1". A driver circuit provides an output to the electromagnetic injector valves while the flip-flop is in the "0" state.
