1482495 Coated products JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 21 Aug 1975 34738/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A process for coating a thermoplastic resin containing as a principal component a thermoplastic polyvinyl acetate, polymethylmethacrylate, polystyrene, polybutene, polyvinyl butyral or polymeric olefinic chloride resin e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or a vinylidenechloride/vinyl chloride copolymer with a thermosetting resin layer containing as a principal component a liquid epoxy, phenolic or polyester resin comprises forming on the surface of the thermoplastic layer a solution of the thermoplastic resin and a coating comprising a butadiene resin and a mutual solvent for the butadiene resin and the thermoplastic resin, at least partially fusing the solution, applying to the coating e.g. by spraying, painting or wiping, the thermosetting layer and curing the thermosetting layer, the strength of the bond formed in the curing step being increased by incorporating into the coating a solid epoxy, phenolic or polyester resin and a curing agent therefore. In a preferred embodiment, the coating is made by mixing the butadiene resin, a solid epoxy, phenolic or polyester resin, a mutual solvent for the butadiene resin and the thermoplastic resin and a curing agent for the solid resin, the coating being applied e.g. by wiping, painting or spraying so as to result in dissolution therein of the outer surface portion of the thermoplastic layer. The butadiene resin may be polybutadiene, an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, a butadine-styrene copolymer, an acrylonitrilebutadiene copolymer or a mixture thereof.
