Abstract

1482358 Bearings F L SMIDTH & CO AS 17 Sept 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 44855/74 Heading F2A [Also in Divisions F4 and G3] A rotary drum, for example a rotary kiln, is supported by a line ring 2 which rests on rollers. The drum is mounted within the line ring on support elements 3 which can be adjusted to maintain sufficient clearance between the ring 2 and drum 1 so that the relative velocity between the ring and drum when the two rotate is maintained at a desired amount. The elements 3 are adjusted when at their uppermost unloaded position during the rotation of the drum. The clearance at the uppermost point is measured by a device 7<SP>1</SP>, 7 and then is compared in a device 8 with a selected clearance set at 9. If the clearance measured by the device 7<SP>1</SP>, 7 varies from that selected a signal is transmitted to the motor 6 via the slip rings 10. The motor turns the support elements 3 until the clearance is again of the desired amount. In a further embodiment the clearance between the line ring and drum may be controlled by wedge-shaped supporting elements (23), Fig. 2 (not shown), with a control mechanism in which the actual migration rate is compared with a selected migration rate to determine the amount of adjustment that should be imparted to the support elements.
