Abstract

1482221 Washing-machines PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 July 1974 32697/74 Heading D1A To allow free thermal expansion in both axial directions a washing machine agitator is secured to a drive nut 12 on a drive shaft 11 by means of a lock nut 14 and clamping means supported thereon, preferably formed as a column portion 6 of the agitator, which urge an inwardly directed shoulder 16 on the agitator against the drive nut. The column portion 6 may be of polypropylene and the other portion 5 of the agitator, which carries vanes 7 and has a frusto-conical section, may be of thermosetting plastics e.g. phenol formaldehyde resin. Alternatively both portions may be of the former material. The shoulder 16 supports a seal 17. The agitator is oscillated about the axis of shaft 11 within a tub 4, e.g. in a twin-tub machine, and its portion 5 covers a drain pipe opening 8 and an immersion heater.
