Abstract

1482084 Electrostatic spraying apparatus NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 Oct 1974 [1 Nov 1973] 50839/73 Heading B2F [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for electrostatically depositing powder, comprises a powder hopper 10 for feeding powder into the housing of a fan 12, wherein the powder is charged by triboelectrification at the surfaces of the fan rotor and the housing on rotation of the fan, and an outlet conduit 40 leading to a powder output nozzle 14. The nozzle may be metallic and connected to conduit 40 by an insulating section 42 of nylon, epoxy resin or polytetrafluoroethylene, for example. In an alternative embodiment, the nozzle is electrically insulating and contains tubes (72) Fig. 3, (not shown), skewed relative to the nozzle axis. In a further embodiment the nozzle is made from a composite material having a resistivity in the range 10<SP>7</SP> to 10<SP>9</SP> ohm-metres. The surfaces of the rotor and a lining 38 of the housing may comprise aluminium having an oxide film or they may be made of polyurethane. The hopper is shaken by a vibrator 28, the powder emerging in a fluidised state after passing through a sieve 18 across a chamber 16 around the base of the hopper before entering the fan, said chamber having a variable air intake thereto so that the density of the powder cloud emerging from the nozzle is adjustable. An alternative hopper is disclosed which maintains the powder in a dry state. The vibrator may be replaced by a powder pump comprising a helical screw in a cylindrical chamber. An alternative pump has a parallel-finned rotor, rotated about a horizontal axis, the volume of powder loaded between adjacent fins being variable according to the position of wedges which slide between the fins.
