Abstract

1482060 Accelerating the ripening of tobacco AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 29 May 1975 [3 June 1974] 23400/75 Heading C1B A process for accelerating the ripening of tobacco leaves, preparatory to their harvesting and curing, comprises applying to the leaf, when it is fully-developed and has reached physiological maturity, and while it is still fresh an effective amount, not exceeding 200 milligrams per tobacco plant, of one or more phosphonic acid compounds which conform to the general formula: (where X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP> and X<SP>3</SP>, which may be the same or different, are each oxygen or sulphur; and R is an alkyl or alkenyl group, optionally substituted by one or more hydroxy, alkoxy, amino, substituted amino or quaternized amino, halo, cyano, carboxyl, sulphonamido or phosphono groups) or corresponding functional derivatives thereof being salts, hydrolyzable esters, amides, acid halides or anhydrides formed with the - X<SP>2</SP>H and/or - X<SP>3</SP>H groups of the phosphonic acid compounds of general Formula I above. The compound may be mixed with a suitable carrier, preferably liquid, e.g. water, and containing 0À04-0À4 lbs/U.S. gallon of compound, or a concentrated solution may be prepared, containing 30-95% compound for dilution and use. The solution may contain stabilizers, acids, and/or buffers.
