1481924 Petrol tank safety cap REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 14 March 1975 [20 March 1974] 10864/75 Heading B8T A breather cap for motor vehicle fuel tanks comprises an annular cavity 4 which contains a packing of sintered plastics or a felt material, a hole 5 which connects the cavity with the atmosphere, a cup 6 which closes the cavity save for cup apertures 8, and metal strips 9 for securing the cap to the filler tube of the tank. The packing prevents or retards oil spillage in the event of an accident. In a first modification, Fig. 2, the annular cavity 14 is not entirely filled with the packing but has its hole 15 aligned with a sleeve 25 that has oppositely facing shoulders which accommodate a disc of the packing material The cap is provided with ribs 21, 22, 23, which with lugs 28 properly position the metal strips (not shown). In a second modification Fig. 4, the annular cavity is filled with the packing and is provided with three bosses 35, 36, 37, boss 35 having a bore 39 connecting with the atmosphere. An annular washer is situated beneath the bosses and closes the bore 39 if the vehicle overturns.
