Abstract

1481649 Foot measuring apparatus MARKS & SPENCER Ltd 2 April 1976 [3 April 1975] 13733/75 Heading G1X A foot measuring device displays a shoe length whose value depends on both the length and width of a foot, and comprises means for sensing the length and means for sensing the width of a foot operatively connected to a scale and pointer; the scale is divided into sectors with each sector divided into at least two regions each representing a different shoe length, whereby in use the sector displayed is dependent on the means sensing the length and the region of the sector indicated is dependent on the means sensing the width of the foot. The device shown has a slider 5' slidable along a spine 3 for detecting the length of the longer of two feet positioned one each side of the spine, and two lateral sliders 11 for detecting the width of the wider of the two feet; the lateral sliders are linked by racks 14 and pinions 16 so that they move together and at the same time rotate cylinders 32, 33 in the spine 3 which carry alternative scales 37, 38. A lens 24 and spot 25 constitute a pointer for the scales. The scale 38 is similar to that shown in Fig. 4, which is divided by lines 20 into sectors 19, each sector being divided by lines 26a, 26b into regions 27, 27a, 27b. The middle region 27 represents a given size, increasing by a ¢-size from sector to sector, and the lateral regions 27a, 27b represent a ¢-size smaller and larger - thus, a narrow or wide foot would move the lateral region 27a or 27b into line with the pointer to indicate a shoe length a ¢-size shorter or longer, e.g. in Fig. 4 regions 27'a, 27, 27'b all indicate size 6. A central line 28 divides the scale into a "slim" shoe-fitting zone 19' and a "wide" shoe fitting zone 19". Cylinder 33 is slidable by means of a knob 34 to cover or expose the scale 37 on cylinder 32. The scale 37 is divided only into shoe-length indicating sectors oblique to the longitudinal and circumferential directions of the cylinder 32 and is intended for use where shoes are available only in one -width fittings.
