Abstract

1416919 Foot measuring apparatus MARKS & SPENCER Ltd 3 May 1974 [20 June 1973] 29372/73 Heading G1X A foot measuring device provides a single shoe size measurement which is dependent upon both the length and the width of the foot. The device comprises an end stop 2 against which the heel rests, a longitudinal slider 5 which locates the longest toe, an elongate stop 3 against which one side of the foot rests, and a lateral slider 11a to locate the other side of the foot. In a preferred embodiment, the device accommodates both feet although only the largest foot length is sensed, the lateral sliders 11a, 11b being slidably mounted on the slider 5. Each slider 11a, 11b is provided with an extension 16a, 16b formed with a magnifying lens having a transparent area 24a, 24b which, in use, passes over a respective size indicating scale 19a, 19b. In further embodiments, the lateral sliders are slidingly mounted between the end stop and an opposed guide. In one embodiment, Fig. 4, (not shown) the spine (3) houses a roller (32) which is linked to the lateral sliders by a gearing movement. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), a rotatable circular scale (42) is linked to the longitudinal slider (5") by linkage, a pointer (43) which moves over the scale being linked, electrically or mechanically, to the lateral sliders.
