Abstract
1481523 Punching apparatus MEAD CORP 13 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49193/74 Heading B4B Apparatus 22 for punching, e.g. a plurality of openings along one edge of a book comprises a plurality of stacked die plates 52 spaced apart to provide gaps into which separated portions or lifts 50 of the book edge can be received, means 70, 72, 88, Fig. 8, for removing the die plates toward each other to clamp the separated edge portions, and a plurality of punches 121, 136 adapted to be moved by drive means 74 through aligned apertures in the die plates in order to punch the openings in the clamped edge portions of the book. The die plates 52 are mounted between a block 64 and a punch guide plate 88, the ends of the die plates engaging with corresponding steps on blocks 178, Fig. 10, so as to determine the spacing between the plates; the ends of the plate are urged against the steps by spring-loaded pins 164, 176. The punch guide plate 88 is connected to piston-andcylinder devices 70, 72 which move the plate against the die plates to effect clamping. The punches 121, are located in slots 118, Fig. 11, formed in a holder 110 and the punches 136 are clamped in the latter by a plate 130; the punches may be hollow so that compressed air can be used to blow out the waste paper. The holder is connected to piston-and-cylinder devices 74 and to a linkage means 153, 160, 163 which maintains the punches in correct alignment during a punching stroke. In operation the books 10 are fed by a conveyer 20 toward the punching apparatus 22. As a book approaches the unit its leading edge is engaged by successive knife edges (34) Fig. 4 (not shown) which separate the stack of sheets of the book into discrete sections or lifts, the sections being guided by guides (42, 44, 46, 48) to the spaces between the die plates 52 up to an adjustable eccentric stop pin (184) Fig. 12. In response to a signal from a photo-electric cell, the conveyer is stopped and the piston-and-cylinder devices 70, 72 and 74 are actuated successively to clamp and punch the separated sections of book.
