Abstract

1481434 Alumina body NORTON CO 3 Sept 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 38395/74 Heading C1A The invention comprises a shaped alumina body of purity greater than 99À5% Al 2 O 3 (exclusive of water) containing at least one of the chi and kappa forms and at least one of the gamma, delta and theta forms, having a surface area of 70-220 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a pore volume by water adsorption of 60-85% by weight, a crushing strength for 0À1 in. diam. pellets of more than 7 lb, an attrition loss for 0À1 in. diam. pellets of less than 5% by weight, and an abrasion loss of 0À1 in. diam. pellets of less than 0À22% by weight (these tests being defined); and their production by mixing 30-80 p.b.w. of gibbsite fired to a loss of weight on ignition of 8% or less, 20-40 p.b.w. of microcrystalline boehmite, and 0-50 p.b.w. of desensitized microcrystalline boehmite adding 2-10% by weight of a monobasic acid of anion no larger than that of propanioc acid (e.g. HNO 3 , HCl, formic acid), and 80-120 p.b.w. of water per 100 p.b.w. of the alumina mixture, mixing to provide a freeflowing mix, shaping by pressure, drying to remove at least 80% of the weight of added water, and firing at 300-1200‹ C.
